Roundup: Friday afternoons, what scalpers allow, cut and skip as the week closes

Friday has a surprising number of threads on this board, which probably says something about how many of us have bad Fridays. Nine of them cover the same ground from different angles, and the agreement between them is strong enough to be worth putting in one place.

Why Fridays are different

The last two hours of the week thread lists the market side: after about 18:00 UTC liquidity falls and positions get squared before the weekend. Expect partial reversals of the week's main move as profits come off, quiet drifting price with small ranges, occasional sharp moves on thin books especially in crosses, and spreads widening into the close.

The losing on Fridays thread adds the personal side: fatigue after a long week, impatience to finish green, and trying to make up the week on the last day. A reply in that thread suggests a simple journal split: Friday trades by time of day. The damage is often concentrated after the London close, with mornings fine. Another reply adds a market cause that wasn't on the list: first-Friday US payrolls, which reshape the whole afternoon from a London point of view.

Allowlists, not avoid-lists

The GBPUSD Friday thread has the idea I'd copy first: a short list of allowed setups, with everything else banned, which is easier to follow than a list of things to avoid. The main allowed setup there is the London open range break between 07:00 and 08:30, only in the direction of Thursday's close relative to Thursday's open, and only if the Asian range was under 35 pips.

Two EURUSD threads describe the Friday afternoon setups that make some lists:
  • The opening drive after the US equity open. Between 14:30 and 14:45 London, a burst of dollar flow often arrives. That thread only trades it if EURUSD moves at least 12 pips in the window with clean M1 candles.
  • The post-data first pullback, optional rather than a staple: data done, spread snapped back, level pre-marked, half size, and flat well before the weekend window. Written on Thursday night as a conditional.
The mid-session mean reversion thread is the sceptical one. Fading the move into the weekend is seductive and often expensive, so it's only allowed when London left a clear extended move and there's a pre-written magnet to fade back to.

Cut the window

Several threads cut the session short. The summer liquidity thread ends Friday EURUSD trading at 12:00 London from June to the end of August, earlier if Asia was dull and lunch spreads are drifting wider, without waiting for the US open in hope. The calm Friday thread uses a cutoff too: if not in a trade by early afternoon, the week is done.

The low volatility Fridays thread defines a quiet Friday by 08:30: Asia range under half its normal size, no major data, and EURUSD spending London's first 30 minutes inside the Asia range. If all three are true, max two trades and smaller targets.

The one thing everyone agrees on

Don't try to rescue a bad week on Friday afternoon. Every thread that mentions it says the same thing: accept the week and start Monday clean.
