A Calm Friday Afternoon Strategy

Fridays can be tricky. Many traders close positions before the weekend, volatility fades, and reversals appear without warning. Having a clear approach prevents late-week mistakes.

Common Friday patterns:

- Profit-taking after the week's trend
- Retracements into earlier ranges
- Reduced liquidity late in the day
- Increased risk of gaps if you hold over the weekend

Two sensible approaches:

Option 1: Trade less or stop early.
If your weekly goals are met, or you've had a loss, closing the platform by midday is a valid decision. Many traders find Friday afternoons add little and cost much.

Option 2: Trade only high-quality setups with tighter management.
- Limit yourself to one trade
- Use smaller size
- Take profit earlier
- Close before the weekend unless there's a strong reason to hold

Pre-close routine:

1. Review open trades and decide what to hold or close.
2. Check weekend news risks.
3. Confirm stops are in place.
4. Do your weekly review.

Warning signs: boredom, urgency to "end the week green," or trying to recover earlier losses.

Remember that a week is not a scoreboard you must win every time. Some weeks are small, some are negative, and that is acceptable if your process stayed intact.

Finish calmly, and the weekend becomes a real rest.

The thing that improved my Fridays most was a simple cutoff. If I'm not in a trade by early afternoon Lagos time, I'm done for the week. Late Friday setups during the New York session have a habit of reversing just before the close. It's worth checking your own numbers before setting the exact time. Pull every Friday trade from your journal and split them by entry hour. If the afternoon ones are clearly worse, the cutoff is justified by data, not just feeling. On days with US payrolls, which usually come out on the first Friday of the month at 1:30pm Lagos time, I'd be even stricter and either trade before it or not at all.

Trying to make up the week's losses on a Friday is the classic one. That's when risk discipline slips the most. If the week was bad, I'd rather accept it and reset on Monday than force a recovery trade on the quietest day. Friday afternoon after about 6pm Lagos is often thin and choppy, with profit-taking reversing the week's trend for a few hours. A trade taken to rescue the week in those conditions has worse odds than normal and higher emotional stakes. A weekly loss limit helps here. If you've hit it by Thursday, Friday is a review day.
