Reading a central bank statement in the first minute

Post by FXS London Scalper »

For Bank of England or ECB decisions, reading the full statement in real time isn't possible. Focusing on a few things helps.

What to look for first:
  • Rate decision compared with expectations.
  • Vote split for the BoE, since it shows which way the committee is leaning.
  • Key phrases that changed from the previous statement.
  • Any change to forward guidance.
A tip: prepare a copy of the previous statement before the release, and compare the new one side by side. Changes in wording matter more than the wording itself.

For scalpers: the first minutes after the release are usually too volatile to trade. The press conference, later, can move the market again.

What markets expect matters too: a rate cut that's fully priced in may cause little reaction, while a hawkish vote split can move sterling strongly.

After the event, write down what you expected and what happened. Over a year that note becomes a practical guide to how each bank's statements are read.
