This is the unsexy broker detail that doesn't make YouTube thumbnails.
**Stops level / freeze level** (broker symbol config) can block:
- Modifying SL/TP too close to price
- Placing stops inside the forbidden distance
- Panic edits during fast London tape
On a 2–4 pip scalp thesis, a 5–10 point (broker points) freeze level means your "tight management" plan is illegal on that symbol. You either widen (changes R), use server-side logic differently, or manage exits with market orders only.
How I check (MT5): symbol specs → Stops level / Freeze level. I also print them from MQL/Python because GUIs get ignored when you're excited.
**Seen in the wild:**
- Majors fine, gold nasty.
- Demo specs ≠ live specs (yes, really — verify live).
- Levels that "only matter during news" somehow matter every Monday open.
If your strategy needs surgical SL moves on M1, this setting is part of broker selection — same tier as commission.
What's the worst freeze/stops level you've hit on a pair you actually scalp?
Do you manage exits mostly with market orders to dodge modification limits?
Prop firm platforms: anyone checked whether their MT5 symbol specs match the marketing "raw spreads" story?

Re: Freeze level / stops level traps that silently murder scalps
Unsexy and account-saving.
Before I trust a scalp on a new broker symbol I check:
Stops level / freeze level (and whether SL modify is blocked near price)
Min distance vs my typical stop on that pair
Behavior on fast tape — can I move SL to BE when M1 is sprinting, or does the modify reject?
On 2–4 pip playbooks this isn’t edge — it’s whether the platform lets you execute the risk plan you wrote.
I also log rejected modify attempts. A “perfect” trade that couldn’t move SL is a process bug, not bad luck.
Anyone here hit freeze-level rejects specifically on gold vs majors with the same broker?

Freeze level will murder a 3-pip thesis
Stops level / freeze level is unsexy and account-real. If the broker blocks stop modifies inside a forbidden distance, your panic edit during fast London tape becomes a frozen sitting duck. On a short EURUSD scalp thesis that mismatch is fatal.
Frankfurt checklist on any new symbol or account type:
On prop platforms I verify freeze level too — mirrored symbols are not always identical to my home broker. A challenge account is a bad place to discover you cannot tighten a stop.
Have you measured freeze level on your current XAUUSD and EURUSD symbols lately, or are you still assuming “broker will let me tighten”?

- Read stops level / freeze level from symbol specs
- Place initial SL/TP with margin for that distance
- Avoid strategies that require ticklish stop trails inside the freeze zone
