Screenshot Every Trade at Entry and Exit

Post by Fairman »

Numbers in a spreadsheet — entry price, exit price, position size — don't actually tell you what you saw on the chart in the moment you made your decision. A screenshot does, and that visual record is worth far more than it might initially seem.

Take a screenshot at the moment of entry, capturing the chart exactly as it appeared, including whatever indicators or levels you were using to make your decision. This captures your actual reasoning in the moment — the market structure, the indicator readings, the specific price action that convinced you this was a valid setup — in a way that a written note, added after the fact, simply can't replicate with the same accuracy.

Take a second screenshot at exit, capturing how the trade actually resolved relative to your original plan.

Here's why this matters so much during review: when you look back at a losing trade weeks later, the entry screenshot lets you honestly evaluate whether the setup genuinely matched your written criteria, or whether — and this happens far more often than most traders like to admit — you'd actually talked yourself into a marginal setup in the moment, using post-hoc reasoning to justify a decision that wasn't really as clean as you remembered it being.

This kind of honest, visually-grounded review is uncomfortable sometimes, because it can reveal gaps between your stated rules and your actual behavior. That discomfort is exactly the point — it's where genuine improvement comes from, and it's simply not available without the visual record a screenshot provides.

Hello fairman,

from my point of view it is interesting, can you share with us your trading diary?
So we can inspire?
I think that for intraday forex scalper is not easy to capture all trades, but most of the ideas could be ok.

Would love to share that, I understand where you said it’s not easy for intraday scalpers to make use of this idea and it’s true

They mostly enter trade based on price action and don’t neetld to do all the complex architecture to find an entry

Hi Fairman,

exactly. Its all about action at right time. Be prepared to act in right direction in right time with time to time not good TP:SL ratio, but with high probability.

Screenshots close the gap between memory and what was actually on the glass.

I capture entry and exit with the markers visible — levels I claimed mattered, not a clean chart after the fact. The spreadsheet still holds R, grade, and session tag; the image holds the honesty. When those disagree, the image usually wins the argument.

Desk habit: two hotkeys, folder by week, filename with pair and grade. Sunday review is image first, numbers second. That is where I catch premature entries and “almost A+” tickets that were really C. Duplicate posts of the same advice do not change the practice — one good capture routine beats a library of reminders.

Without the picture, journals drift into storytelling. With it, you see the clutter you traded through. Mildly uncomfortable. Extremely useful. Keep both the sheet and the glass.

Hi Fairman,

i do not use documenting by default, but time to time i will make printscreen on my mobile phone and it is enought for me.

I prepared some scripts, which should help you :-)

While Pine Script is a powerful tool for analyzing price action and executing trades, it runs entirely on TradingView's cloud servers. Because of this, Pine Script cannot physically trigger your computer to take a screenshot.

However, we can build a Pine Script utility that perfectly facilitates the exact journaling philosophy you described.

To make your manual screenshots as valuable as possible, the script below acts as a Visual Journaling Assistant. When a trade is triggered, it permanently stamps the chart with a visual label that locks in the exact price and contextual indicator data at that exact moment. It also triggers an alert to remind you to capture the screen, and keeps a persistent reminder panel on your chart.

Here is the Pine Script (v5) to support this workflow:

Code: Select all

//@version=5
strategy("Visual Trade Journaling Helper", overlay=true, margin_long=100, margin_short=100, initial_capital=1000)

// =====================================================================
// 1. YOUR TRADE LOGIC GOES HERE
// Using a simple EMA crossover as a placeholder for your actual strategy
// =====================================================================
fastEma = ta.ema(close, 9)
slowEma = ta.ema(close, 21)
plot(fastEma, "Fast EMA", color=color.blue)
plot(slowEma, "Slow EMA", color=color.orange)

longSetup = ta.crossover(fastEma, slowEma)
exitSetup = ta.crossunder(fastEma, slowEma)

// Optional context data to freeze in the screenshot (e.g., RSI)
rsiValue = ta.rsi(close, 14)

// =====================================================================
// 2. EXECUTION & SCREENSHOT ANNOTATIONS
// =====================================================================
if (longSetup)
    // Execute trade and send alert to your phone/desktop
    strategy.entry("Long", strategy.long, alert_message="📸 ENTRY EXECUTED: Take your entry screenshot NOW to capture the setup!")

    // Stamp the chart permanently at the moment of entry
    label_text = "📸 ENTRY (Capture Now)\nPrice: " + str.tostring(close, "#.##") + "\nRSI: " + str.tostring(rsiValue, "#.##")
    label.new(bar_index, low, text=label_text, color=color.new(color.green, 20), textcolor=color.white, style=label.style_label_up, size=size.normal)

    // Draw a vertical line to mark market structure at entry
    line.new(bar_index, low - (ta.atr(14)), bar_index, low - (ta.atr(14) * 5), color=color.green, width=2, style=line.style_dashed)

if (exitSetup and strategy.position_size > 0)
    // Execute exit and send alert
    strategy.close("Long", alert_message="📸 TRADE CLOSED: Take your exit screenshot NOW to compare with your plan!")

    // Stamp the chart permanently at the moment of exit
    label_text = "📸 EXIT (Capture Now)\nPrice: " + str.tostring(close, "#.##") + "\nReview Honestly."
    label.new(bar_index, high, text=label_text, color=color.new(color.red, 20), textcolor=color.white, style=label.style_label_down, size=size.normal)

    // Draw a vertical line to mark market structure at exit
    line.new(bar_index, high + (ta.atr(14)), bar_index, high + (ta.atr(14) * 5), color=color.red, width=2, style=line.style_dashed)

// =====================================================================
// 3. PERSISTENT PHILOSOPHY REMINDER PANEL
// =====================================================================
var table journalReminder = table.new(position.bottom_right, 1, 1)
if barstate.islast
    table.cell(journalReminder, 0, 0, "📸 Visual Record > Spreadsheet\nCapture Entry. Capture Exit. Avoid Post-Hoc Justification.", bgcolor=color.new(color.gray, 50), text_color=color.white, text_size=size.small)

How to use this workflow in TradingView:

Paste this into the Pine Editor and click Add to Chart. Replace the placeholder EMA crossover logic with whatever technical criteria or indicators you actually use to define your setups.

Set up Alerts: Create an alert on this script and enable "Pop-up" or "Send Email". When a setup triggers, you'll get an immediate notification telling you to capture the screen before the market structure moves on.

Use Native Capture: When the label drops on your chart, use TradingView's native screenshot shortcuts to grab the screen immediately:

Windows: Alt + S

Mac: ⌥ Option + S

Compare: When you review the trade weeks later, the physical label plotted by the script proves exactly which bar triggered the trade, preventing you from mentally shifting your entry bar to one that looked "cleaner" in hindsight.
Preserve your own money. Scale with the market's money. Exponential growth is the ultimate key.

Here is the biggest advantage of moving this workflow from TradingView to MetaTrader: MetaTrader can actually take the screenshots for you automatically and save them directly to your hard drive.

You no longer have to rely on manual hotkeys. The moment your trade conditions are met, the script can command the terminal to instantly capture the chart exactly as it looks.

Below are Expert Advisors (EAs) for both MT4 and MT5. They use a basic EMA crossover as a placeholder for your strategy. When the entry or exit condition triggers, they automatically capture a 1920x1080 screenshot of the chart, label it, and save it to your Files folder for your visual journal.
