Hey everyone,
Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. I’ve been trading forex majors for about a year with mixed results, and I’m about to embark on what is probably a schizophrenic trading strategy. I wanted to throw it out to the community to see if I’m walking into a meat grinder or if there’s a method to the madness.
Here is the plan:
1. The Long-Term Play: Accumulating EUR/XAG (Silver vs. Euro)
I’ve been looking long and term at the macro picture for precious metals, specifically silver, and I want to start building a long-term swing/investment position buying EUR/XAG (Silver priced in Euros).
The Thesis: Between global supply deficits in the silver market and structural inflation pressures in Europe, I want exposure to physical/derivatives silver hedged against the Euro.
Scalping Eur/Xag
Re: Scalping Eur/Xag
The Plan: I'm scaling in slowly—adding small spot/leveraged positions on dips on the daily/weekly charts, tucking them away, and ignoring the short-term noise for my core portfolio.
2. The Daily Pain: Trying to 1-Min Scalp It
Here is where things get messy. While I build that long-term stash, I want to keep my hands busy and work on my execution skills by scalping on lower timeframes (M1/M5 charts).
The Problem: Scalping precious metal crosses like XAG/EUR can be brutal due to wider spreads and sudden liquidity spikes compared to something like EUR/USD.
The Guardrails: To keep myself from blowing up my account, I’ve instituted strict daily rules:
Max Risk per Trade: 0.25% to 0.5%.

Re: Scalping Eur/Xag
Daily Loss Cap: Hard stop at 1.5% max drawdown per day. Once I hit that, MetaTrader gets closed, laptop goes shut, and I walk away. No revenge trading.
Session Window: Only trading during the London open overlap when liquidity for European assets and metals is at its peak.

Re: Scalping Eur/Xag
My Questions for the Forum Veterans:
1. Spread & Cost Reality: Am I shooting myself in the foot trying to scalp a metal pair like EUR/XAG instead of sticking to a tight forex major like EUR/USD? The spread on silver crosses can chew up a scalper's margins fast if you aren't careful.
2. Strategy Clash: Does mixing a long-term macro investment mindset with high-frequency 1-minute chart micro-management completely fry your brain psychologically? Has anyone successfully traded "two speeds" like this at the same time?
Would love to hear your brutally honest feedback, favorite indicators for lower timeframe metal action, or warnings before I start funding this experiment.
Cheers

Re: Scalping Eur/Xag
I tried something close to this on silver a couple of years back and the spread was the first thing that hurt. On my broker the silver cross cost about three times what EURUSD did relative to the average M5 candle, so a quarter percent risk trade needed a much bigger move just to break even. I tracked fifty scalps and roughly a third of the gross profit went straight to costs, which is why I would be careful about the metal for the one minute work.
On the two speeds question, it worked for me only when the two accounts were physically separate. When the long term silver position and the scalps sat in the same terminal, a red day on the swing side made me size up the scalps to win it back, and that was the end of my guardrails. A separate account with its own loss cap fixed that.
I would keep the scalping on EURUSD or GBPUSD in the London open and let silver be the slow position that you only look at weekly.

Fair play Amanhasnoname, the separate account bit is the bit most folk skip. i did similar and kept the long stuff at a different broker entirely, so i cant even see it on the same screen as the scalps... out of sight out of mind, bit like my Leeds season ticketAmanhasnoname wrote:A separate account with its own loss cap fixed that.

Re: Scalping Eur/Xag
Keeping the long position at a different broker is a step further than I took, Graham, and it sounds sensible. I only separated the accounts, but I still had the platform tab for the silver one open beside my scalping charts, and I caught myself glancing at it after a losing trade. Even a look at a red swing position was enough to make my next entry a bit more hurried. So out of sight really does matter, more than I would have admitted before I tracked it.
What helped me on top of the separation was a weekly rule for the slow account. I open it on Sunday evening, review the position against my original reason for holding it, and then close it until the following week. Doing it at a fixed time stopped me from treating it as another screen to trade from.
I also wonder whether your separate broker gave you any difference in the cost side. When I priced the silver cross, the spread was much larger relative to the candle than on EUR/USD, so I would be curious what you pay.
