Stop orders versus limit orders for scalp entries

A stop entry guarantees participation in a breakout and guarantees nothing about price. A limit entry guarantees price and guarantees nothing about participation. Scalpers pick one or the other, often without thinking about what each really costs.

Stop orders pay the spread and often some slippage, because they trigger exactly when everyone else is also buying or selling into thinning liquidity. On a fast breakout of a range, that extra half pip can be the entire profit target.

Limit orders sit in the book, get filled by sellers coming to them, and typically capture the spread instead of paying it. The catch is adverse selection. Fills come most often when price is about to go through the level, not bounce from it. The trades filled are disproportionately the ones that would have been losers.

So neither is free. Breakouts favor market or stop orders and accepting the cost. Mean reversion favors limits but demands a stop plan for when the level fails.

Which side of this trade-off showed up as the bigger drag in your own trade logs?

The cost comparison deserves numbers on your own data. Stop entries pay spread plus slippage on the break; limit entries pay in missed trades, and the missed ones are often the best runners. Logging the trades a limit would have missed shows whether that opportunity cost is larger than the slippage saved.
