Hard stops versus mental stops when trading seconds-long setups
Mental stops are a favorite among scalpers who want to avoid stop hunts and spread-related stop-outs. The idea is to watch the price and close manually when it hits the level. In theory, flexible. In practice, hazardous.
Reaction time is the first issue. A human takes a few hundred milliseconds to see, decide, and click, and another few hundred for the order to travel. On a rapid move, that adds up to extra pips. Decision fatigue then adds hesitation, so the stop is often delayed or moved.
Hard stops execute on the server with no human delay, even though they are exposed to spread widening and slippage. The disconnection risk also favors them: if the platform or the internet fails, the hard stop remains.
A middle route exists. Place a hard stop wider as a disaster limit, and use a mental or script-based exit inside it for the usual case.
That protects against both the catastrophic outcome and the unnecessary stop-out.
