Trend following with weekly charts: fewer trades, longer holds

Post by FXS London Scalper »

Most retail traders focus on intraday or daily charts, but weekly charts offer a different approach: fewer decisions, larger trends, and less noise. The trade-off is long holding periods and wide stops.

A simple rule to explore: buy when the weekly close exceeds the highest close of the past 20 weeks, sell on the opposite, exit on a 10-week reversal. Position size has to be small because stops are wide.

A worked example: with a stop 400 pips away and risk of 1 percent on a 10,000 account, the position size is around 0.025 lots on a dollar-quoted pair. Such small sizes may require a broker that supports micro lots.

Swap costs become significant over months, so including them in any test is essential. Some trends earn positive carry, others cost.

Psychologically, weekly trading requires patience through long periods of no signals and open trades that give back profits.
