Trading the London fix: what is known and what is guesswork

Post by FXS London Scalper »

The 4 pm London fix, used to set benchmark rates for many institutional flows, can create unusual price action in the minutes before and after. Month-end fixes in particular are watched for rebalancing flows.

What is known: large orders are executed around the fix, and flows can be predictable when equity markets move strongly over a month, as asset managers adjust their hedge ratios. What is guesswork: the direction and size on any given day.

A method to study this is to record price movement from 15:45 to 16:15 London time over many days, separating month-end days from others. If the month-end moves show a pattern related to equity performance, there may be something to explore.

After fix-related scandals years ago, practices changed, and the fixing window was widened. Older patterns may not apply today.

For most retail traders, the main lesson may simply be to avoid placing tight stops near the fix on month-end days.

Has anyone looked at fix behaviour systematically?
