Netting versus hedging: scale-ins behave very differently

On a hedging account every order opens a separate position. On a netting account every order on the same symbol merges into one position with a blended average price.

The difference shows up fast for scalpers who scale in and out of a trade in several clips. On netting, adding to a loser shifts the average entry. Partial closes realise slices of profit in a way that is harder to track. A sell order meant to "hedge" simply reduces the buy.

Reports change too. Statistics per entry become statistics per position, which can hide the real hit rate of individual signals.

Neither mode is wrong. They need different record keeping. Moving from MT4 to MT5 without checking which mode the account runs is a classic way to get confused by the first few trades.

Position sizing tools behave differently as well. On a netting account the calculator should treat each add as a change in total exposure, not as a fresh trade with its own risk. Many do not, and the total quietly grows beyond the planned limit.

A quick way to adapt: keep a separate note for each trade idea, listing every add and reduce with its price and size. On a netting account, the platform will not do that bookkeeping, and reconstructing it afterwards from a blended average is guesswork.

Which mode has worked better for a style that scales in and out?
