The freeze level wall

The freeze level wall

A scalper tries to tighten a stop as price runs. The platform answers with an error and the original stop stays where it was. Price reverses, the old stop gets hit, and the screen shows a polite message about "invalid stops" that explains nothing.

Two different distances are in play. Stop level controls how close to the market an order can be placed. Freeze level controls how close to the market an existing order can be modified or cancelled. Inside the freeze zone, the order is locked in place.

Both numbers sit in the symbol specification, vary by pair and broker, and sometimes widen without notice during news. Expert advisors that ignore them just spam the server with rejected modifications.

Looking up the values on the three most traded pairs takes two minutes and removes a whole class of mystery errors.

A habit that helps is pulling up the symbol specification for the top three pairs and writing the stop and freeze levels on a sticky note beside the screen. The numbers change rarely, and having them in view prevents surprises when a trailing stop needs to move quickly.

Has a locked stop ever cost more than the original trade risked?
