Death by a hundred small losses nobody counted

A single one pip loss feels like nothing. Twenty of them in a session feel like a drizzle. Yet the sum can wipe out the gains of several good trades without any single moment feeling painful.

The reason is that small losses slip under the threshold of attention. No big red number appears. The account just seems to drift sideways while activity continues.

A scalper may end a session with a dozen winners and a dozen losers, convinced it went fine, only to find the net result is slightly negative once costs are included.

The remedy is looking at the aggregate more often. A running tally of net pips after costs, checked at fixed intervals, brings the drift into view. So does tracking the cost per trade, which shows how quickly the spread and commission eat the edge.

Some traders set a stop-trading rule based on cumulative loss in pips rather than a single trade, which catches the slow bleed that individual stops cannot.

A useful picture is a chart of cumulative net pips after costs, updated live. A line that slopes slowly down while the trade count climbs tells the story that no single trade does.

Is there a running total in view during sessions, or only the result of the last trade?

Small losses are easy to ignore because each one feels like nothing. Say a scalper takes 20 trades a day and closes 8 of them early at a 1 pip loss because they didn't feel right. That's 8 pips a day, about 160 pips a month over 20 trading days. On a 1 lot position that's roughly $1,600 a month on EUR/USD, which might be the entire profit of the strategy. Without adding them up, they look harmless. Adding them up is the first step.

This one is accurate for me, and I only saw it when I changed what I measured. For months I looked at the win rate and the average winner, and both looked healthy. Then I added a column for the cost of every trade and a running total of the net pips after costs. In one month of 310 trades, the 1 pip losses and the near break even exits added up to minus 94 pips, and my larger winners barely covered it.

The fix I use is a weekly count of the trades I closed within two pips of entry. If that count is higher than around 25 percent of all trades, I know my entries are weak or I am exiting out of nervousness. Looking at the number was far more effective than telling myself to be patient.

I also keep the cumulative net line on a second monitor and glance at it every hour. A line that slopes down gently is easy to ignore until you can see it.
