Rate differentials as a gate for yen trades

Post by FXS London Scalper »

USDJPY has often tracked US Treasury yields, particularly the 10-year, because rate differentials drive much of the flow. Some traders use yields as a filter: only buying USDJPY when yields are rising, only selling when they fall.

A simple way to test this is to compare daily changes in the pair and the 10-year yield over a year and see how often they move together. Then test a basic trend rule on the pair with and without the yield filter.

The relationship is not constant. During risk-off episodes, the yen can strengthen even with rising yields, and intervention can break the link entirely. A filter that worked over one period may fail in another.

Intraday, the relationship can be visible around US data releases, when both move at once. Watching a yield chart beside the pair can help interpret moves.

It is also worth considering the two-year yield, which is more sensitive to near-term Fed expectations.

Does anyone here use bond yields as part of their FX setup?
