Freeze level vs stop level: two worked examples

Post by FXS London Scalper »

These two settings confuse many newcomers. Two examples on EURUSD with price at 1.0850 and a 5-digit quote:

Stop level of 20 points (2 pips). A buy limit must be at least 2 pips below price, so 1.0848 or lower. A stop loss on a long must be at least 2 pips below the bid. Trying 1.0849 gets rejected with "invalid stops".

Freeze level of 10 points (1 pip). If you have a buy limit at 1.0845 and price falls to 1.0846, the order is frozen: you can't modify or delete it, because it's within 1 pip of triggering. Same for a stop loss close to price.

Practical consequences:
  • Trailing stops can fail to update in fast moves near the trigger.
  • Cancelling a pending order just before news may fail if price has come close.
Both values are in the symbol specification and can be read by an EA. Some brokers change them around news, so check at your trading times, not once.
