Maintenance windows and the broker's quiet announcements

Post by Shadow Trader »

Brokers maintain their servers, usually on weekends, but sometimes on weekday evenings. Notices go out by email or on a status page that few people read.

During maintenance, the platform may disconnect, orders may not fill, and quotes may freeze. Open trades keep running at whatever the price becomes afterward. Pending orders can behave oddly: some trigger late, some trigger at a gap price, some are cancelled.

Brief outages at awkward moments matter more to scalpers than to anyone else, since a few seconds of disconnection can separate a profit from a loss. Even a two-minute downtime during an active setup is costly.

Server migrations are worse. A broker moving to new infrastructure can change latency, quote behavior, or even trade execution characteristics overnight, and clients only notice after results shift.

Subscribing to the broker's status notifications is a small step. Keeping a record of dates when execution quality changed, and checking them against announcements, shows how often infrastructure changes lie behind unexplained shifts in performance.

An extra precaution is to keep a note of the broker's typical maintenance schedule: which weekend, which hour, how long. Patterns usually emerge after a couple of months. Knowing that the platform tends to go offline for ten minutes at 6:00 GMT on Saturday morning, for example, avoids leaving automated systems running into a known outage.

How much notice does the broker give before maintenance, and did an outage ever hit mid-trade?
