Around 7 to 9am London time, Tokyo is winding down and Europe is waking up. EURJPY, which depends on both regions' flows, shows a distinctive pattern during this window.
Japanese players are squaring positions before the end of their day. European desks arrive with fresh orders and views from overnight news. The two groups often disagree, and price oscillates between them.
The common pattern is a quick burst in one direction as the first European orders arrive, then a retracement as the rest of the market weighs in. The move is frequently larger than USDJPY's or EURUSD's alone, because EURJPY inherits volatility from both legs.
Spreads are wide at the start of the window and narrow quickly. A scalper entering too early pays an elevated cost for a move that usually reverses.
A useful trick is to watch the two legs. If EURUSD and USDJPY both push in the direction that favors a EURJPY move, it's more likely to continue. If they disagree, EURJPY tends to stall.
Is the handover window on EURJPY a source of consistent setups, or mostly noise?
