Same broker, different servers

Post by Shadow Trader »

A broker can run several trading servers: Live1, Live2, Demo, ECN, Standard. Each is a separate system, with its own hardware, load, and sometimes its own liquidity setup.

Accounts are assigned to a server when opened, and the assignment isn't always obvious. Two clients with the same broker can experience different execution speeds and different spreads, because they're on different machines.

Server load matters most during news. An overloaded server delays orders, drops quotes, or freezes. A lightly loaded one keeps working.

Latency also varies. A server in one data center may be 2 ms from the VPS, and another in a different location 40 ms.

Asking support which server the account is on, and where it's physically located, is a legitimate question. Some brokers will move an account to a different server on request, especially if there's a reason such as a VPS location.

A comparison of ping times to each server, from the same machine, shows the difference immediately. The fastest may not be the default.

The test is straightforward: open a connection to each available server and measure latency and spread over a few hours, ideally including a busy period. A server that looks identical in the platform list can behave very differently, and the best one for execution isn't always the one the broker assigns by default.

When asking support for a change, specific data helps. A table showing ping, average spread, and rejected-order counts for each server makes a stronger case than a vague complaint about slow fills. Brokers respond better to evidence, and some will move accounts without fuss when presented with it.

Which server is the account on, and has a move ever been requested to improve speed?
