Cable's early London twitch

Post by Shadow Trader »

GBPUSD has a character at the London open that the euro doesn't. Right at 7 or 8am, there's often a burst of volatility that lasts a few minutes, sharper than EURUSD's. Spreads widen, then compress, and price shoots off in a direction that frequently reverses.

The reason is partly structural. Sterling is a smaller market than the euro, so the same order moves it more. And a lot of the pair's early flow is local, from UK corporates and funds, so the open brings a concentrated burst of activity.

The pair is also more reactive to UK-specific headlines, which land in that window: early morning data releases, Bank of England commentary, politics.

A pattern often seen is the "first thrust" followed by a retrace of 50 to 70 percent. That doesn't happen every day, but often enough to matter. Chasing the first move tends to lose.

For tracking purposes, the first fifteen minutes can be treated as a volatility event rather than a trend signal. The real direction tends to show up after 8:15.

One more feature is the correlation with the euro. When EURUSD makes a clean move at the open and GBPUSD lags or does the opposite, EURGBP picks up the difference and often provides a cleaner trade than either leg. Because EURGBP has lower volatility, the moves are smaller, but the pair is less prone to sudden spikes.

Looking at where GBPUSD stands relative to the Asian range at 7am is a useful filter. A pair already pressing the edge of its overnight range tends to produce a sharper first thrust, while one in the middle of the range often drifts. That alone can sort the mornings worth watching from the ones to skip.

Does the first thrust and retrace pattern on GBPUSD hold up across a larger sample, or only on cherry-picked days?
