Guaranteed stops in forex: why they're rare

Post by Shadow Trader »

Guaranteed stops promise a fill at the stop price, regardless of gaps. They're common on some spread-betting and CFD platforms in a few markets. In spot forex through MT4 or MT5, they're almost nonexistent.

The reason is risk. The broker takes on the gap risk. If the market jumps 100 pips through a guaranteed stop, the broker pays the difference. To compensate, it charges a premium, either a wider spread or a fee when the stop triggers, and often limits the minimum distance.

The premium makes them costly for scalping, where stops are tight and triggered often. A fee that's reasonable for a swing trade eats a large share of a 3 pip stop.

They also have conditions. Many guaranteed stops are available only on certain pairs, sizes, or account types, and may be suspended around news or when volatility is high, precisely when they'd be most useful.

Understanding what a stop really guarantees, and what it doesn't, changes how positions are sized around events.

Would a guaranteed stop ever be worth the premium on a short-term trade?
