Large option barriers and the pinning that precedes a break

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Beyond the daily expiry discussed in other threads, big barrier options sit at levels where a knockout or knock-in triggers when price touches. Those levels can produce unusual behavior.

Price may gravitate to a barrier if dealers need to hedge, then break through sharply once it triggers. Stops and hedging flows can add to the move.

Information about barriers is limited for retail traders. Some banks publish commentary, and certain data providers sell options positioning. The details are often approximate.

A sign of barrier activity is price repeatedly stalling at a level without obvious technical reason, followed by an abrupt break.

For scalpers, the safest approach is respecting those stalls. Trying to fade a level that a large barrier defends can be costly, and chasing the break is also risky.

If a barrier is known, trades near it should be smaller, with stops placed accordingly.

Has price action ever pointed to a barrier or large option interest, and how was it handled?
