The ECB fix and the mid-afternoon European quirk

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Around 2:15 in the afternoon Central European time, the European Central Bank publishes reference exchange rates. Some corporate flows use them, though the impact on the market is lighter than the London fix.

Euro pairs sometimes show a small burst of activity before this time, and the spread may tick up briefly. Mostly it is a minor detail in a busy part of the day, since it falls close to the New York open and the data releases that cluster at 8:30 New York.

The practical value is as a reminder: the hour around 13:00 to 14:30 GMT is crowded with scheduled events and flows, and mixing them up in a journal makes it harder to identify what drove a given move.

Tagging trades by the nearest scheduled event helps separate effects. Over time, the journal shows which windows are worth trading and which only add noise.

It also helps with avoiding the habit of attributing every move to the same cause.

How are overlapping scheduled events around the NY open handled in analysis?
