Negative balance protection and what it does not cover

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Many brokers advertise negative balance protection: if a gap pushes the account below zero, the broker absorbs the loss. For retail clients in some regions, it is mandatory.

It is a useful safety net, but it does not protect the trader from the loss of the full account. It only prevents debts beyond the deposit.

It also has limits in practice. Some brokers apply it only to certain account types, and terms vary for professional clients or offshore entities. A gap during a flash move can still produce a margin call at a terrible price, wiping out the account before protection matters.

Reading the terms shows whether the protection is a legal guarantee or a discretionary policy. A broker that says it will 'consider' absorbing losses is not offering the same thing.

For scalpers, the main lesson is keeping leverage low enough that a gap does not threaten the entire balance, with or without protection.

Does your broker's protection apply automatically, and is it written in the terms?
