Stopping on a good day

Post by Amanhasnoname »

A daily profit stop is less common than a loss limit, and more debated. The argument for it is that giving back gains after a strong morning is painful, and that quality deteriorates after a big win.

The argument against is that stopping early cuts the upside on good days, and strategies with positive expectancy should keep trading while conditions are favorable.

Data can settle it. Look at the journal for days when the account was up by a certain amount by midday, and compare the afternoon results. For some traders the afternoon is a net giveback. For others it adds steadily.

A middle path exists: after reaching a target, reduce size by half or raise the setup quality threshold. It keeps participation while limiting damage.

Whatever the approach, deciding in advance is better than deciding mid-session, when emotions interfere.

What does the data say about trading after hitting the daily target?
