Quote throttling on high-frequency accounts

Post by Shadow Trader »

Some brokers slow down the price stream for accounts that trade frequently. Quotes still arrive, but at a reduced rate, or in a filtered form that skips small changes.

The practical effect is that a fast scalper sees fewer ticks than a casual trader on the same account type. A strategy relying on tiny, fast moves sees a coarser picture of the market.

It's rarely announced. The sign is a feed that looks smoother than expected, or a tick count per minute that's lower than a colleague's on the same broker.

A comparison is the clearest test. Record the number of ticks per minute from the live account and from a fresh demo account or a second trader's account on the same server. If the busy account gets markedly fewer ticks, throttling is likely.

Throttling is sometimes a technical limit to protect servers, and sometimes a policy to reduce latency-arbitrage risk. Either way, strategies built and tested on a full feed can behave differently when the live feed is thinned.

Tick counts on demo versus live on the same broker: do the numbers match or not?
