Opening range breakouts and why they fail more than expected

Post by Amanhasnoname »

The first thirty minutes of a session sets a range, and a break above or below is treated as a signal. London and New York opens are the usual choices.

The idea is appealing, and it works sometimes. The failures, though, are underappreciated. In forex there is no official open. Liquidity builds gradually, and the first minutes include repositioning that has little to do with the day's direction.

Another issue is overlap with news. A break at 13:30 GMT may be a reaction to a data release, with spreads wide, rather than a genuine breakout.

To test the approach, define the range precisely, record every break over a few months, and note the outcome. Include costs. Many versions show a small edge before costs and none after.

Variation by pair and session matters. Some pairs break cleanly at the London open, while others whipsaw. Looking at one pair and one session at a time keeps the data interpretable.
