Second-tier data releases are not worth ignoring

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Traders focus on payrolls, inflation, and central bank decisions. Secondary data, like retail sales, PMI surveys, and trade balances, gets less attention. That is a mistake in both directions.

On quiet days, a mid-tier release can be the biggest event of the session, and the market reacts more than expected because there is nothing else going on. A surprise in a PMI number at 9am London can move a currency pair twenty pips.

Spreads widen modestly, and fills get worse in ways that are easy to miss. Scalpers who ignore the calendar suffer slippage and stop-outs without realizing a release was the cause.

A useful practice is marking every release, even minor ones, on the chart for a few weeks and observing the reaction. Some have almost no impact. Others consistently produce moves.

With that information, the calendar becomes a filter: a short list of releases that deserve avoidance or attention for specific pairs.

Which secondary releases have surprised you with a large reaction?
