Exotic pairs look like free money until the spread shows up

USDZAR, USDTRY, and USDMXN have ranges that make a EURUSD scalper drool. A 40 pip move in an hour is routine, and the charts are full of clean looking swings.

Then the cost arrives. Spreads of 20 to 80 pips are normal in quiet conditions, and they widen further without warning. A scalper needing 5 pips to profit on a major needs 100 or more on some exotics just to break even once costs are included.

There is a second layer. Exotics carry large swap, positive or negative, and the numbers are often big enough to dominate a short trade held across rollover. A position that looks profitable on the chart can bleed carry for hours.

Liquidity is also patchy. Many exotics trade mainly in their home time zone, and outside it quotes can be stale, jumpy, or simply absent. Stops fill far from where the chart suggests they would.

So the exotics can work, but only as a different game: bigger targets, smaller size, and trading only when the home market is open.

A simple way to size an exotic trade is working backwards from the spread. If the quoted spread is 40 pips, a target needs to be several times that to make the maths work, so the setup has to be built around moves of 150 pips or more. That changes everything about holding time, stop distance, and position size.

The positives are real, though. Exotics can trend cleanly for hours, and the moves are driven by factors that major pair traders ignore, like local politics, commodity prices, and central bank surprises. Traders who specialise in one of them, learning its calendar and its habits, sometimes find an edge that majors no longer offer.

The danger is the tail. Exotics can gap violently on a political headline, and a stop that looked safe becomes a suggestion. Sizing for the gap, not for the average day, is the only sane approach.

Has an exotic ever turned a good looking chart into a bad result?
