USDCAD and the oil connection that comes and goes

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Canada exports a lot of oil, so USDCAD is often described as a proxy for crude. Oil up, Canadian dollar up, pair down. Simple, and sometimes true.

The relationship is not stable. It strengthens in some periods and nearly vanishes in others, depending on what is driving markets. When interest rate expectations dominate, the oil link weakens. When commodity news dominates, it tightens.

For scalpers, the useful bit is timing. Weekly oil inventory data comes out on Wednesdays, and a surprise there can move USDCAD within seconds. The pair often reacts at the same time as crude, with small lags.

A practical approach is keeping a crude chart on a second screen and watching for fast moves. If oil jumps and USDCAD has not yet moved, a short window may exist. The window is brief, and spreads widen right at the event.

The risk is assuming the link holds every time. Testing it with historical minute data over a few months before trading it is wise.

Has the oil and USDCAD relationship ever delivered a repeatable scalp, or is it too inconsistent?
