Margin and stop-out on a small account in the middle of a scalp

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Small accounts with high leverage have a quiet danger: a stop-out can trigger faster than the stop loss. Brokers close positions automatically when margin level drops under a threshold, often 50 percent, sometimes 20.

A scalper running several positions at once on a small balance can hit that threshold during a sharp spread widening, even if each individual stop is still far away. The broker closes the worst position at market, usually at a terrible price.

The math is easy to overlook. Margin level equals equity divided by used margin. When equity shrinks from floating losses, and used margin stays fixed, the ratio drops quickly.

The best defense is leaving a lot of headroom. If margin level goes below roughly 500 percent during normal trading, the account is running tight.

Also check what the broker does at stop-out. Some close the largest losing position first, others the oldest, others everything.

That detail decides whether a bad moment is a bruise or a blown account.

What margin level does a typical session on your account run at, and has it ever come close to the limit?
