Stop level restrictions and why a tight stop gets refused

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Many brokers set a minimum distance between the current price and any stop or limit order. It is called the stop level. A 2 pip stop level means no stop can sit closer than 2 pips to the market.

For scalpers that restriction collides with tight strategies. A setup built around a 1.5 pip stop simply cannot be entered as a pending order on such an account, and attempts return 'invalid stops' errors.

What makes it worse is that the stop level changes. During volatile periods or around rollover, brokers widen it, sometimes by a lot. A stop that was fine at 14:00 is refused at 21:58.

Check the symbol specifications in the platform. The stop level is listed for each instrument, though only the default value and not the temporary expansions.

Workarounds exist. Place the order at market, then set the stop immediately after, if the account permits it. Or use a mental stop with a hard backup further out.

Has a restrictive stop level ever pushed a strategy to a different broker or order type?
