Quarterly futures rolls and the odd behaviour around expiry weeks

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Currency futures expire quarterly, in March, June, September and December. Around those dates, positions are rolled from one contract to the next, creating flows that can influence spot prices.

Large institutions manage their hedges through futures, so the roll period brings extra volume and occasional unusual price action. Some pairs behave differently in the days leading up to expiry, with pinning or sudden shifts as positions are adjusted.

Evidence of a reliable edge is thin, but awareness helps. A day when price behaves unusually near a round level could relate to expiry flows.

For those using futures data as a reference, the roll also matters technically. Continuous contract charts can show gaps at the roll, and indicators calculated across them may misbehave.

A calendar of expiry dates, usually the third Wednesday of the contract month, is easy to maintain. Marking them alongside option expiries and month-end gives a fuller view of flow events.
