The rand has deep liquidity during South African hours, and then falls off a cliff. After the Johannesburg close, USDZAR can go from tradable to nearly absent. The quote keeps updating, but behind it, there's barely any depth.
A scalper who sees a clean setup at 10pm New York might not realize that the ask has widened to 80 or 100 points and the fills are being priced off a model rather than a live book.
The risk is gaps within the session. A tick can jump 150 points with no trade in between, and a stop in that zone gets filled at the first price after the jump.
The pair is also sensitive to risk sentiment, so global equity swings push it around. During Asian hours, those moves are exaggerated because the local market is closed.
An odd bonus: because the rand is sensitive to gold and commodity prices, it sometimes tracks those with a delay. That delay looks tradeable, though execution quality usually destroys the edge.
Treating it as a pair that exists only during South African hours is a reasonable rule, and one that's rarely broken without regret.
Is USDZAR ever worth trading outside Johannesburg hours, or is that just asking for bad fills?
