Wellington and Sydney: the early hours that move NZD and AUD

Post by Amanhasnoname »

The trading week begins in New Zealand and Australia. Those first hours have a distinct character, particularly for the currencies of those countries.

Liquidity is thin, spreads are wide, and price can move on small flows. Local data releases arrive in this window, including New Zealand's trade figures and Australian employment numbers. Central bank decisions from the RBNZ and RBA also land during these hours.

For scalpers, NZD and AUD pairs offer more volatility in this window, but also more cost and more fill risk. A data release at 9:30 in Sydney can produce a sharp move with wide spreads and heavy slippage.

Understanding the local calendar is essential. Many European and American traders aren't awake for these events, and then wonder why a pair moved overnight.

For those who do trade the early session, smaller size and wider stops are common adaptations.

Do you trade the Sydney and Wellington opens, and which events do you watch?
