Brokers advertise negative balance protection, promising that losses can't exceed the deposit. The details deserve a closer read.
In regulated regions, such as the EU and UK, retail clients are covered by rules that require this protection. Elsewhere, it may be a voluntary policy that the broker can modify or limit.
Protection usually applies to the account as a whole, not to individual trades. It kicks in after the fact, when the broker writes off the negative amount. It doesn't prevent the loss from occurring, and it doesn't prevent the broker from taking action like closing positions or restricting trading.
Some brokers apply conditions, such as excluding certain account types or clients classified as professional. Reading the client agreement avoids unpleasant surprises.
For scalpers, the main takeaway is that the protection is a backstop, not a strategy. Sizing positions to avoid even approaching a negative balance remains essential.
Have you checked what your broker's protection covers and what it excludes?
