FOMO on a candle: the cost of entering because it already moved

Post by Amanhasnoname »

A strong candle appears, price rips through a level, and the instinct is to get in before it's gone. The entry usually comes at the worst price of the move.

Chasing has built-in costs. Spread is wide in fast markets. Slippage is high. The stop has to go farther away because the structure is behind. Reward-to-risk shrinks, often to something poor.

Plenty of fast moves also pause or retrace after the initial burst. Entering at the top of the burst means taking the drawdown on the way back.

Patience offers an alternative. Waiting for a pullback to a known level gives a better price and a tighter stop. The risk is that price doesn't come back, and that's an acceptable cost. Missed trades don't appear on the statement.

A written rule can help, such as never entering after a candle larger than twice the average range without a retest.

How do you handle the urge to chase a move that already left?
