Headline CPI versus core: which one the market is actually watching

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Inflation data comes with several numbers, and it's not always obvious which one drives the reaction.

Headline CPI includes food and energy. Core strips them out and is often viewed as a cleaner signal of underlying trends. Month-on-month and year-on-year figures add more versions. The market focuses on whichever one best fits the current story about central bank policy.

When energy prices are swinging, core tends to matter more. When the debate is about inflation persistence, services figures within the report can take over.

A release can have the headline beating and core missing, producing a mixed reaction and a whipsaw. Preparing for that means knowing the consensus for each component beforehand.

Looking at how price reacted to the last several releases helps. Which number seemed to drive the move? That context is usually stated in market commentary.

For a scalper, mixed data is a reason for caution, since the first move often gets reversed.
