What real intervention looks like on a tick chart

Verbal intervention is talk. The real thing is a central bank buying or selling its own currency in size, and it leaves a distinct footprint.

The move is violent and one-directional. A pair that was drifting suddenly drops 150 pips in minutes, with almost no retracement along the way. Spreads widen dramatically, quotes vanish, and the tick rate spikes.

Timing is a clue. Interventions tend to arrive when liquidity is thin: late in the New York session, during Asian holidays, or right after a data release that pushed the pair to an extreme level the authorities dislike.

Afterwards comes a partial rebound, as the market digests the news and some participants test whether the central bank will repeat the action. The rebound can retrace a third to a half of the move within hours.

For a scalper, the danger is a position on the wrong side of a move that doesn't pause. Stops get filled at far worse prices than expected.

The warning signs include official comments in the days before, a pair at a multi-year extreme, and unusually quiet trading that precedes the action.

Position handling in such an event is a matter of preparation, not reaction. Brokers typically raise margin on the affected pair, widen spreads, and may restrict new orders. Stops can be filled hundreds of pips away. The practical defense is to keep size small enough that a gap of several hundred pips doesn't threaten the account, on any pair that has a history of official intervention.

It also helps to know the levels at which authorities have acted before. Past episodes cluster near particular exchange rate ranges, and traders watch them closely. Price approaching such a zone is a time for lower size and wider caution, not for aggressive scalping.

Last time a pair approached a level where authorities were rumored to be watching, how were positions handled?
