Ahead of big releases, price sometimes drifts in one direction as participants position. After the data, that drift often reverses.
The logic is that positioning pushes price toward what the market expects. If the result matches expectations, there's little left to drive a continuation, and traders who took the early position close out. If it surprises, price moves sharply the other way.
Scalpers occasionally try to trade the drift itself. The trouble is that it's slow, choppy and runs into widening spreads as the event nears.
A few observations: the drift tends to be strongest in the last 30 to 60 minutes. It's often modest, a handful of pips. And its direction is a weak predictor of the post-release move.
Some traders use it as a contrarian tell, preparing to fade the move once data arrives. Others ignore it completely.
Testing across 30 or 40 releases of the same type gives a better view than any single case.
