Gold and the yen: the other safe haven
Gold and the yen are both safe-haven assets. In risk-off episodes, both tend to rise against the dollar. In calm periods, their relationship is looser.
On a daily level, the correlation fluctuates. In some regimes, USDJPY and XAUUSD move inversely, since both respond to the same fear. In others, gold follows real yields, and the yen follows risk sentiment, and the two diverge.
At short timeframes, a sudden burst of safe-haven buying shows up in both within seconds. A spike in gold with no matching yen move suggests a gold-specific driver, such as a large futures order. A joint move suggests broader risk aversion.
Watching both together takes a split screen, and it adds some depth to the reading of a fast market.
The pair of instruments isn't a trading system, only a sanity check.
When gold and the yen move together in a burst, how often does the move last?
