Round numbers: why 00 and 50 levels do something real

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Support and resistance lines drawn at round prices sound like folklore. There's a mechanical reason they matter, though.

Orders cluster at round numbers. People place stops, take-profits and pending entries at levels like 1.1000 because they're easy to remember. Banks also hold option barriers and large client orders at round strikes.

That clustering produces specific behaviour. Price often slows or stalls as it approaches the level, then either bounces or accelerates through when the cluster is hit. The break can be violent, because stops trigger in a burst.

For scalpers, the 00 and 50 levels offer reference points with real order flow behind them. Fades from just before the level, with a tight stop beyond it, are one approach. Breakout entries after a clean push through, with the stop back inside, are another.

Both need discipline about spread and slippage, which are worst exactly when a level breaks.

One refinement is to treat the zone, not the exact price, as the level. Orders cluster within a pip or two of the round number, so a stop placed exactly on it often gets hit by the first wave, while one placed just beyond the zone has a better chance of surviving.

Which levels, round numbers or otherwise, have you found reliable enough to trade?
