Reading imbalance from tick rate instead of volume bars

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Without real volume, some scalpers turn to the speed of price updates. When ticks arrive faster, something is happening. When they slow, the market is waiting.

A simple approach counts the number of ticks over the last 10 seconds and compares it to a rolling average. A spike in that count often comes right as a move begins or accelerates.

Direction matters too. Counting up-ticks and down-ticks separately gives a crude sense of pressure. If 70 percent of ticks over the last 30 seconds were upward, buyers are in control, at least for now.

None of this is precise. Quote updates reflect liquidity providers adjusting prices, not only trades. But as a short-term gauge, it picks up shifts before candles close.

Testing is straightforward. Record tick data on a demo and compare the count and direction before moves of a certain size. Many find it works better as a filter than as an entry signal.

Anyone using tick rate or tick direction, and how reliable has it been?
