When the yen weakens rapidly, officials sometimes warn, and occasionally act. That intervention creates some of the sharpest moves in the market.
A typical episode involves a series of verbal warnings, then a sudden drop of two or three big figures in USDJPY within minutes. Spreads blow out, liquidity disappears, and stops are filled far from their levels.
For a scalper long USDJPY, the danger is obvious. For a scalper short, there is a sudden profit but also a risk that the move reverses, and that fills at the best price aren't available.
Warning signs include comments from finance officials, historic levels where action occurred before, and unusually rapid, one-sided moves.
Reducing exposure on yen pairs near those levels is sensible. Some traders remove them from the watchlist entirely during tense periods.
