Why the order book you see is only your broker's slice

Post by Amanhasnoname »

The forex market has no central exchange. Each broker connects to a set of liquidity providers and shows a version of the market based on that set.

So when a platform displays a market depth ladder, it only reflects the broker's own pool. Another broker connected to different providers shows different depth and sometimes different prices. There's no single true order book.

This is what makes forex order flow analysis so different from futures. Tools that claim to show the real order book are either displaying one broker's data or estimating from other sources.

For scalpers, the lesson is humility. Signals derived from one broker's depth are specific to that broker. A pattern that looks consistent might be an artefact of how that firm aggregates quotes.

More reliable inputs include futures data from the CME, where volume and order flow are centrally recorded, and used as a proxy for spot activity.

It also explains why indicators that claim to show the real order book often disagree with each other. Each one is built from a different broker's pool or a different estimate, so a signal that works on one feed may disappear entirely on another one.

Has anyone tried building signals from futures data to trade spot?
