The tight-spread window and the pressure to use it

Post by Shadow Trader »

It is 07:02 and the spread on the pair has just dropped to its daily low. The window is open, and everyone knows it is short. Nothing has set up yet, but the clock is running, and it feels like the one chance of the day to trade cheaply is slipping away.

So an entry goes in, a bit early. Right pair, right time, wrong setup. Price drifts sideways, the spread widens again as the window closes, and the exit costs more than the entry did.

The irony is that the tight spread was meant to be a bonus on top of a good setup, not a reason to create one. A narrow spread on a bad trade is just a slightly cheaper bad trade.

It also helps to remember that the window is not unique. The same conditions show up again in the next session, the next day, and sometimes again within the hour. Spread behavior varies by broker and by account type, so it is worth checking how long the good stretch really lasts instead of assuming it is a few fleeting minutes.

What have you found about how long the tight-spread windows really last on your broker, and does the pressure to use them show up in your entries?
