Off quotes and invalid price errors: what they are telling you

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Error messages in trading terminals are cryptic on purpose, or by accident. Off quotes usually means the price sent no longer matches any available quote. Invalid price means the order price is outside what the server accepts, often because the market moved while the request was in flight.

Both errors tend to arrive in bursts. A run of three rejected clicks during a fast move is common, and the instinct is to keep clicking. That's the mistake. Each retry gets sent against a market that's still moving, and when one finally fills, it often fills at a much worse price than the first attempt would have.

A better habit is to pause for a beat after the first rejection, look at the current spread and tick rate, and decide whether the setup still exists. If the move already happened, the trade is gone.

Also worth noting: frequent invalid stop errors on modifications usually mean the stop is too close to the market for the broker's minimum distance.

How many retries does it take before you stop trying?
