Trading through illness, grief, and other life events

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Life events affect trading. Illness, bereavement, a move, a relationship crisis, or financial worry all alter attention, mood, and risk tolerance. Pretending otherwise leads to errors that cost money.

The recommended response is honesty. Rate current capacity before each session. If concentration is poor, cut the size, reduce the hours, or skip the day. A scalping system needs fast, reliable decisions, and impaired judgment is a risk factor.

Automated systems require a different caution. They continue to run regardless of the trader's state, but oversight is still needed. Reduce exposure when unable to monitor properly.

Rules can formalize it: a checklist of conditions under which trading is paused, such as sleeping less than a set number of hours, or experiencing acute stress.

After a major life event, give time before returning. The market will still be there.

Looking after health, physical and mental, is not separate from the trading business. It is the foundation of it.
