Doubling the lot size doubles the swings in dollars, even if the strategy is unchanged. A loss that was trivial becomes uncomfortable. Decisions that were automatic start to feel heavy.
The typical effects are hesitation at entry, premature exits, and rule violations triggered by larger numbers. The strategy's edge is still there, but the execution deteriorates.
A gradual increase helps. Raise size in small steps, and stay at each level until the behavior is stable. Monitor rule adherence, not just profit.
Another approach is thinking in percentage or pip terms and ignoring the dollar amount. Some traders set the display to show pips only.
Compare the performance at different sizes. If execution quality falls consistently above a threshold, that size may be above the comfort zone, or may reveal an execution problem like slippage rising with size.
The right size is one where decisions remain the same as at the minimum.
At what size does the quality of decisions begin to change?
