Liquidity sweeps: the quick poke that clears orders and returns

Post by Amanhasnoname »

A liquidity sweep is a sharp move through an obvious level, just far enough to trigger stops, followed by a quick return. It shows as a wick on the chart: a spike beyond a prior high or low, then a close back inside.

The mechanism is simple. Orders cluster at obvious points. Large participants need liquidity to fill their own orders, and the clustered stops provide it. Once the orders are filled, the push ends.

Scalpers use sweeps as entry triggers: wait for the poke, and enter in the opposite direction after price returns inside the range. The setup depends on the sweep being a sweep and not a genuine break.

Distinguishing them is the challenge. A sweep reverses rapidly and with decreasing activity. A break holds beyond the level and attracts volume.

Testing requires clear rules for the reentry, such as price closing back inside within a set number of seconds. Examine the performance across many instances, including costs.

Many apparent edges disappear when the entry is realistically delayed.

What rules separate a sweep from a real break in the data, and how reliable are they?
