Option barriers and the pull toward knock-out strikes

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Barrier options, which cease to exist or come into existence when price touches a level, create hedging flows near their barriers. Dealers who sold such options may buy or sell aggressively as price approaches the barrier, which can cause sharp moves or sudden stalls.

For scalpers, the effect appears as price repeatedly hitting a level and reversing, or as a spike through the level followed by a quick retreat. The behavior is hard to explain from the chart alone.

Large barriers are sometimes reported by banks and in market commentary, usually at round numbers. Their influence depends on size and the time to expiry.

The information is imprecise and often incomplete. Treat it as context rather than a signal. If a large barrier is reported near the current price, expect irregular behavior around it, and be careful with tight stops placed there.

After the barrier is breached or expires, the constraint disappears, and price can move freely.

Record such levels when they are published, and see how often price reacts. Over time, the sample indicates whether the information adds value.

Has the reported presence of option barriers explained odd price behavior at a level?
